(Although appointments are preferred, students may be seen on a walk-in basis, depending on the problem and availability of the staff. If necessary, appointments are available before or after school. As a service for our primary care patients we offer after hours phone access to an on-call provider on evenings, weekends, and vacations. Who We Are
Riverside Health Center is a Primary Care Health Center conveniently located within Riverside High School. We provide healthcare to school age children and their families, school staff and the community. We are here to provide care to students of busy working families, students with/without transportation and students with or without insurance. We provide care to students efficiently so they miss very little classroom time and parents can have peace of mind knowing that we will be here to provide all of their primary care when they need us.
We are part of the Cabin Creek Health Systems, your community owned non-profit health center. We have provided services to students at Riverside High school and the surrounding community since 2001.
Riverside Health Center Providers
Stephen Sondike, MD
Stephen Sondike is a board certified pediatrician, with a specialization in adolescent medicine who provides care at the Riverside Health Center on Monday and Friday mornings. Dr Sondike graduated with a Bachelor of Art in Biology and Chemistry from Washington University in St Louis, MO in 19990 and from the SUNY School of Medicine in Brooklyn, NY in 1994. Dr Sondike completed a pediatric residency in 1997 and an adolescent medicine fellowship in 2000 at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.
Before coming to West Virginia Dr Sondike spent five years working at children’s hospitals in New York and Wisconsin. In addition to providing care at the Riverside Health Center two mornings a week he also works with the WVU Physicians of Charleston specializing in obesity and eating disorders.
Mary Grandon, PA-c
Mary Grandon is a certified Physician Assistant who has been providing care at the Riverside Health Center since 2006. Mary graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Science from Alderson Broaddus in 1992. Before coming to work at Riverside, Mary worked with school based health centers in Clay County.
Mary currently resides in Clay County with her husband Eric. In her spare time she enjoys mission work in Haiti.
Vickie Sorrell , FNP-BC
Vickie Sorrell is a Nurse Practitioner who has been providing care at the Riverside Health Center. Vickie has been a nurse for 25 years in Critical Care, Emergency Room Trauma. She was born and grew up in West Virginia, one of twelve siblings.
Vickie has been married for over 22 years to a retired Police Officer from Upper Marlboro, Maryland. She has been doing animal rescue for 16 years and lives in Jackson County on a small farm.
Malissa Gamponia, MD
Melissa Gamponia is a board certified family medicine physician who has been providing care at the Riverside Health center since early 2008. Dr Gamponia received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Indiana University in 1987, her Master’s of Public Health from John Hopkins University in 1994, and she graduated from the West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1991. Dr Gamponia completed a general preventive medicine residency at John Hopkins University and a family medicine residency at the University of Iowa. Before coming to Riverside Dr Gamponia worked as a private practice physician in Charleston for 10 years.
Dr Gamponia currently resides in Charleston. In her spare time she enjoys running, biking, and travel.
